Typography: The Importance

When we think of letters, do we just think about that it's apart of a word or do we see it as a form of art? Letters have become invisible to the fact that they're not just objects that are used in words, but rather as a form of art to represent the sounds, words, and information that we speak on which is a type of communication; verbal. In order to interpret these visuals in our brains and process them with their sounds, we have to understand what they represent. In essence, typography is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the copy legible, clear, and visually appealing to the reader. Typography involves font style, appearance, and structure, which aims to elicit certain emotions and convey specific messages. Typography is what brings the text to life.

Typography is so much more than just choosing beautiful fonts: it’s a vital component of user interface design . Good typography will establish a strong visual hierarchy, provide a graphic balance to the website, and set the product’s overall tone. Typography should guide and inform your users, optimize readability and accessibility, and ensure an excellent user experience.

  1. It defiantly is much more than a pretty font. When writing my blog I tried to be clever with the fonts, and it's much harder than just picking one. To convey a artistic and powerful message using the design of words is often overlooked.

  2. I like how you say that typography is art! It's interesting because not many would say that it is. But its true, art is a way to express something or convey meaning and so typography definitely does that! Just like how someone would create a painting or a sculpture, there's a need to consider what the intent of the artist is, what story it tells, and if its meaning is conveyed well. Typography is a bit different though because of its subtlety. However, that's what makes typography interesting because good typography is one that stays in the mind of the viewer while also being subtle enough that one doesn't question its choice.

  3. I enjoyed your blog post, I agree typography is an important visual aspect of design that provides a certain aesthetic and theme to a body of work. It can be used to optimize readability, accentuate a body of text, add character, and even create symbolism. Having a strong visual hierarchy is important to having order in one’s work.
